Cosmetic Liposuction after Pregnancy

Becoming a mother is usually a delight for nearly all women. Nevertheless, many are distressed with the physical changes, which alter their bodies when they are pregnant. Furthermore, the more pregnancies a woman has the greater the distress becomes. Liposuction is a surgical process that removes fatty deposits under the skin that exercise and diet refuse to improve.

Liposuction after pregnancy can often be preferable to abdominoplasty for post partum women because there is no removal of skin, just a removal of fat. There is less physical pain afterward, it is a safer treatment and there are less health risks involved. In addition, scars are less noticeable on the body and the recuperation period is a lot shorter than it is for a tummy tuck.

Liposuction is known as “spot fat reduction” and is one of the most commonly requested forms of cosmetic surgery.

Soon after having a baby a lot of women find themselves so busy that fitting exercise into their daily routines is not easy, and sometimes near impossible. Adding to that is the reality that countless women have a reduced metabolic rate after having a baby. No matter what the reason is, the inescapable fact is that losing body fat in particular areas of the body such as the buttocks, thighs, abdomen area and upper arms becomes increasingly problematic and many women feel discouraged at the appearance and shape their bodies are in.

However, it is not obligatory to have to accept the “post partum” look of one’s body. Liposuction after pregnancy (also referred to as lipoplasty), which can be performed on an outpatient basis and is normally done under local anaesthetic, will help restore  a woman’s figure by eliminating unsightly fatty deposits and offering her a boost psychologically. Many women report higher levels of confidence after undergoing liposuction.

Abdominal Liposuction After Pregnancy

Abdominal liposuction is by far what most women are after following maternity. At the preliminary consultation the plastic surgeon will take down the patient’s medical history, will examine the skin at the site where liposuction is to be performed and will explain the procedure to the individual. Many cosmetic or plastic surgeons would rather put their patients out with local anesthetics while some prefer to use a general anesthetic together with a sedative to encourage the patient to be drowsy but relaxed.

To start the treatment the surgeon makes a tiny incision either just below the bikini line or in the belly button and then inserts into the area of the fatty deposits, a thin tube referred to as a cannula. By applying a certain degree of force to the area in question by means of the cannula, the cosmetic surgeon can loosen the fat and then redesign the area to look more appealing and more balanced. The fatty tissue is then removed from the body by means of a powerful vacuum like machine that is connected to the cannula. Liposuction flushes out the body fat in a particular area but does not affect the blood vessels, skin, nerves or muscles.
Liposuction after Pregnancy
The four most widely used techniques for abdominal liposuction after pregnancy include:

  • Super-wet liposuction
  • Tumescent liposuction
  • Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (or UAL)
  • Dry liposuction

Super-wet liposuction involves the injection of a solution made of saline in conjunction with the anesthetic and adrenaline into the abdomen to help with the loosening and removal of the fatty deposits. Additionally, it minimizes the amount of injury done to the area as well as reducing any swelling and physical pain after the procedure is complete.

Tumescent liposuction after pregnancy is similar to the super-wet method aside from the fact that bigger quantities of the saline solution are used.

UAL is the newest advancement in liposuction and makes use of sound waves to loosen fatty deposits. This method greatly minimizes blood loss and bruising.

The final method, dry liposuction is an early method of this procedure and is rarely used nowadays. Dry liposuction, as its name suggests, does not make use of any liquid solutions for the loosening and removal of unwanted body fat.
